Julia got new pajamas from her Aunt Becky this week, and they are the most adorable pjs I have ever seen!

Nick and Nora PJs adorned with kittens (Julia's favorite) and knitting paraphernalia (Mommy's favorite) on a background of pink. Could it possibly get any cuter?

Letters to Santa

This week the kids wrote their letters to Santa. They all worked so hard and really put their little hearts into getting them just right. They carefully addressed them to Santa, 100 Candy Cane Lane, North Pole, and drew their special stamp because we all know that those letters can't get to the North Pole without the magic of a child's drawn-on stamp. And now they wait...ah, the joys of Christmas!

Weekly Update - May 25th

Well,another not so great week. Some ups but I have had a serious lack of motivation and energy. Need to start taking a daily vitamin. One thing though, I am daily being made aware of how much my husband loves me and how much I love him. My heart if full to bursting for him.

The Fam:
Emma is being a fantastic helper! She is doing so much and without complaining. I am so thankful to have her as a daughter. She's a chatterbox, which can be painfully exhausting; but she is such sweet, caring little girl. Great job, Ems!

Novalee provided an especially funny moment this week. She was being naughty (naturally), so when I went upstairs to get her, she attempted to hide under a blanket, crying out, "I'm a rock! I'm a rock!" I was almost fooled. "D

Kurt experienced TWO firsts this week! On Monday, we went on a field trip with his Infant/Toddler program. It was his first time in a pool. Kurt's not the adventurous type, so he was pretty reluctant the whole time. He sat on my lap in the pool for the first 20 minutes, but eventually he got brave enough to take a few steps away from Mommy to play with his ball. He actually didn't want to leave when it was time to go. My sweet little guy.
Kurt also had his very first haircut on Saturday. We went to the NEX where his first haircut was FREE! Hooray! I was really reluctant to cute those adorable little curls off, but they were getting so raggedy and he hated having a comb pulled through his hair. So...here are the before shots: Pretty nappy, huh? The hairdresser was very sweet and good with him, but he was not too happy about sitting in that big chair all by himself. But he was soon quieted with a yummy Tootsie Pop. "D And here's the video of my sweetie's first haircut.
And she did a fantastic job! I was worried I would hate losing the curls, but it turned out very nice. My handsome boy! Thank you, NEX!

Julia is growing fast! She is such a little chunker! It's too cute, but she's grown out of all her clothes. I had to go shopping to get some summer clothes for her because she practically had nothing to wear. I couldn't find much I really liked though, so I had to settle for mediocre. But she makes them look so much better.

Weight Loss: Still not so good. No motivation at all. Hopefully, sooon. Ever since my sore throat episode, I've wanted nothing but juice. I don't really even want to eat unless it's fruit. I've gone through three bottles of juice by myself this week. Yummy, yummy, yummy! But I know it's wreaking havoc on my teeth. So...I need some motivation. Oh, and did I mention?....JUICE!

Craftiness: Still working on the socks. I've decided to get back into sewing also. I am itching to make some summer dresses for the girls. It's been a slow week for crafting, though. However, on my consignment store run, I happened to find a Baby Surprise Jacket that someone had made...on CLEARANCE for $1.25. I couldn't just leave it there when someone had spent so much time on it. So now Novalee and Kurt are fighting over it.

Bookshelf: Finished The Graveyard Book! I actually ended up really liking it (4 stars). After the ghoul gate thing and when Bod starts to come into his own, it gets kind of Harry Potterish, which was cool with me. Pretty good! So the next book on the bookshelf is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which is supposed to be funny. Looking forward to a book with a lighter mood.

Celestial University: My previous goals were way too much at once for me to remember every day. So right now, I'm just working on one. I'm getting ready for a yard sale for Business & Economics. Went through two boxes from the shed tonight. Hopefully at least two a day. But I've started! Woo hoo!

Not a great couple of weeks for me. I had to bid a very sad farewell to my sailor. So that's....
Also, got a nasty viral throat infection right before he left, so that didn't make things very easy. And to top that off, it came back! That is just so crappy. I know it's not strep because I had a throat culture done, but it sure does feel like it. It is super painful and the only thing I can do to soothe my throat is to keep eating and drinking anything that's not really dry, which brings me to...

Weight loss: Also not a good week for weight loss. Chad took me out to Outback Steakhouse before he left, and then he and the kids grilled hot dogs and corn for my Mother's Day dinner, and then we all went over to Grandma and Grampa's to eat even more hot dogs and hamburgers the next day. Now my throat is killing me, so I'm just eating and drinking stuff all day to soothe my throat. I hate this.

Craftiness: Working on my first pair of socks done at the same time on one circular. Yay! Coming along nicely, but they won't be usable when finished. Since I'm just doing this first pair to learn, they are two different colors so I don't mix them up and I'm using Red Heart Super Saver. Not a good yarn for socks. I know I wouldn't want to walk with that on my feet. Anyway, pics later.

Bookshelf: Reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I really don't like it as much as Coraline and I'm struggling a little to get through it. Something about the ghoul gate weirded me out and I haven't been as enthusiatic about reading the book.

Weekly Update

Okay, I'm going to try to do what Megan started with the weekly update thing. I hope I'll be able to keep it up. I'm actually doing it right now because I need to do something to stay awake. I am incredibly tired and Julia and Novalee will not sleep. So if I'm sounding a little off, you know why. K, gonna try to make some categories that will usually always have a weekly entry.

The Fam:
Emma performed in the school talent show this week. She sang Seek the Lord Early and she sounded beautiful. She was so brave and just got up there and sang her little heart out. She got quite a round of applause. I am so proud of her.

Julia is growing fast. She's already 16 lbs! I think Emma was like 16 pounds at a year old. She can almost roll from her back to her front now, and she can scoot backwards. Really have to watch that one now. She had stage 1 foods for the first time this week also...tender peas. She wasn't that impressed.
I should be sending out her six-month update to everyone soon, so someone remind me to do that.

Kurts seems to be on a "let's see how much I can possibly whine and cry during the day" kick, but I suppose that's normal for a two-year-old.

Novalee's just Novalee.

Chad has duty today so I'm really missing him and being reminded what it's going to be like every day for 7 months when he goes on deployment. This has been a particularly bad day, though, so I'm not too worried.

Weight Loss
The goal is to lose 33 lbs before Christmas! That’s approximately 5 lbs a month. I think I can do that. Also, I need to keep up to date with my Walk to Rivendell.

Craftiness
Almost finished with my Children's Book swap package. Excited to get that out and getting more excited every day to receive mine. The Hubby got me some new fun yarn this week. I got Sirdar Snuggly Poppet in blue and Bernat Baby Boucle in Flower Power, all on clearance! And Chad picked out some sock yarn for me...all by himself (the choices were too overwhelming for me)! He got me Regia Cotton Java sock yarn in colorway 1180. It is beautiful! I am so impressed. You did good, Chad! I'm searching for my 2-at-a-Time Socks book so I can get started on that. Yay! Just signed up for the Superheroes swap, too.

Fun Stuff
There is a way cool tree in front of a house around the corner from us. It looks like it came straight from a Dr. Seuss book! I want one. If anyone knows what kind of tree this is, let me know. Check it out.

On Saturday, we took a family trip to our favorite comic book store, AF Comics, for free comic book day. There were a few characters from Star Wars there, so we had to get pictures.

Celestial University
I've been wanting to participate in this program for a long time and we've finally gotten a couple groups started in Relief Society. I'm going to night school. ;)

So my major is Business & Economics, but I have to complete at least 5 goals in the College of Theology also. These are what I'm going to get started on now:

Business & Economics
1. Be two minutes early for all of your appointments and meetings for one month.
2. Don't use any credit cards for one month.
These will be completed on June 4th, 2009.

Theology
1. Pray twice a day on your knees for one month - Completed by June 5th, 2009
2. Read the scriptures for 15 minutes at least three times a week for two months - Completed by July 5th, 2009
3. Hold family prayer twice a day for a month - Completed by July 5th, 2009
4. Read all of the lessons in the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith manual.

Bookshelf
Megan and I are reading The Picture of Dorian Gray. I actually really love the book even though I really despise most of the characters. But that's a good thing I suppose because if I didn't feel anything toward the characters, that would be a sign of a badly written book. Anyway, it's getting even better now that we're getting down to the nitty gritty and I'm having a hard time putting the book down at night. I'm also trying to finish Covenant Hearts, and LDS book on marriage. And to remind myself, I need to get started on The Gathering: Signs of the Times for bookclub this month.

Dancing on the Dugout

The Ewell family went to our first Norfolk Tides games in our quest to have all the fun we possibly can before Daddy leaves. The girls were chosen to do the Chick-fil-a Can Can on top of the dugout. Novalee won, but they all received prizes. They both got Tides baseballs and Novalee got a Tides ball cap. Loads of fun!!

So yesterday, I went to get a consult from a plastic surgeon to remove a cyst from my inner eye. So in Primary at church two weeks ago, the children plant seeds or beans (don't know which) to take home and grow. Well, Emma has been watering this little seed faithfully for the past two weeks with no results. So I decided to see what was up this reluctant little seed/bean. After dumping all the dirt out into a bowl, I discovered there was no seed, just dirt. So yeah, Emma's been watering dirt for the past two weeks. The curse contintues!

I figure Chad and I will just sneak a seed/bean in there when she's asleep, and hopefully it will grow soon. I just can't stand to crush her little hopes of growing a plant all by herself. She needs to see the reward after all that watering!

Anybody have any ideas for a fast-growing plant. Where would I get a bean? Can you use the dried beans at the store or do you have to find them fresh somewhere? Help!

New Year's Resolutions

Okay, since I've been accused of being a "Slogger" (slacker + blogger), I decided that I had better post something. So here are my New Year's resolutions:

1. Drink at least 2 quarts of water a day (I'm nursing).
2. Do scripture study EVERY day with both Chad and the girls.
3. Wake up at 7 am every week day.
4. Get the kids on a consistent schedule.

Well, the Irish Good Luck Wish had no effect on my nausea. But ginger root did. Yay! Still knocks me down once in a while, but I mostly just get sick at night now. Anyway, had our first ultrasound today. I'm a little further along than I thought; 9 weeks instead of 8 weeks 3 days. The pregnancy calendar says that baby is about the size of a bean right now; but guess what? It looks like one, too! Check it out!

Number 3 For Me

Well, while Chad and I were in Houston, we found out that I am pregnant. We are so happy to be blessed with yet another little one, but I am finding it very hard to look outwardly happy now that I am miserably nauseated morning, noon, and night. I got one of those forwarded good luck e-mails from my dad in which one is supposed to make a wish and pass the e-mail on. Well, I wished that I wouldn't be sick for the rest of my pregnancy, and it's supposed to come true in one day. I'll let you know how that turns out. So we are hoping for a boy this time, but I certainly wouldn't mind another girl. Oh, I'm also I'm pretty sure that it is almost impossible to be a "Fascinating Woman" while in the sickness stage of pregnancy. How am I supposed to look lovely when my makeup keeps smearing and my eyes are puffy and watery from throwing up? How am I supposed to be lovely when my insides decide they want to become my outsides and I am arguing with them every waking moment? How am I supposed to cook delicious meals for my family when the sight and smell of food makes me sick? How am I supposed to dote on my husband when I need him to dote on me? I'm convinced it's virtually impossible, so I will go back to being fascinating when the sickness passes. I'm sure there are certain exceptions to the rules when a woman is in the family way.

Novalee took her first real steps last night! She was leaning back against the couch when she saw an ad for Bambi II on T.V. She got so excited and took three steps toward the television. She can also get to a standing position on her own. She will be walking around the house in no time! Great job, Novie! We love you!

Next week we will be going to Houston for two weeks for Chad's chief training. Obviously, Honey can't come with us, so she will be staying with her Aunt Megan and her two little bunny cousins, Theodore and Dude. She will also be frequenting the Heartland Rabbit Rescue to do some mingling. We hope that she will bond and fall in love with one of the bunnies there. We think she needs to get married, so we are hopeful that she will find a mate while we are gone. We are so glad she will get to have some fun and maybe find love while we are away. Wish her luck!

Obedience

Chad, being the insightful man he is, decided to do our Family Home Evening lesson on obedience...for Emma's sake. As it turned out, she gave us the perfect example earlier in the day. She was supposed to be taking a nap, but she decided that she wasn't going to take one. So she leaned over her bedrail to reach for her Cinderella tea set, fell, and busted her lip open on the side of the storage container. She couldn't eat very well for the rest of the day because of the pain, and her lip is still black & blue. But she didn't stop there. At lunch, I told her that she need to sit on her bottom in her chair. While I was cooking, she got up on her knees and leaned back, which tipped the chair over. That hurt, too. And...this morning, I woke up to Emma repeatedly slamming her bedroom door after Chad told her to stay in bed until I came and got her. Frustrated, I reprimanded her and she told me she hurt her head on the door. The child is accident prone....disobedient and accident prone. We've told her that she needs to listen to Mommy & Daddy or she could get hurt. Obviously this hasn't worked. Any suggestions?

In Memoriam...

I awoke this morning to a phone call from the mother of one of my best friends from high school, Perry. Sadly, he passed away on Wednesday, January 18. He had been sick for quite some time and was waiting for a kidney transplant. I remember taking him to the hospital for dialysis quite a few times. Perry could always make me laugh, and he stuck with me through thick and thin. This is a picture of us when we were on a mission trip with our youth group in West Virginia. We put on a puppet show for the kids there, and we were both in bad need of a haircut. HaHa

After I finished my crying this morning, my husband took me out to get me to cheer up. We decided to go to the mall because we know that's where Perry would have wanted to go. On the way, we put on a song (Heartbreak Hotel by Whitney Houston) that we always used to sing together. Right as I started thinking of Perry, it started to skip. The CD had never skipped before. It skipped a couple more times, and I really felt that it was Perry making his presence known. Whenever Perry and I had gone somewhere, we always got the best parking spaces, so I called him my good luck charm. When we got to the mall we got a parking space right in the front. I turned to my husband and said, "See, Perry's with us." After leaving the mall, we went to Walmart, and again got a parking spot right up front. Too awesome! We never get good parking spots. Perry was still bringing me luck. Perry and I used to walk around Walmart together, too. While looking at car seats for our daughter, my husband pointed out something wonderful. Two younger people walked by, and from behind they looked just like me and Perry! I wish I had had my camera. I couldn't believe it. The way they dressed, the way they walked, even the way they talked. It brought tears to my eyes. I'm so glad he was with me today. I know he's not suffering anymore. Perry was a wonderful person, and I will always love him.

Had a terrible time trying to get the Internet up today. Chad was on the phone with the cable company for a while. After trying everything else, Chad switched the modem cable. Guess what?! Hunny Bunny had chewed through the cord! We're lucky it wasn't a power cord. Soooo....we will be buying electrical tape tomorrow to tape up all the cords to the top of the computer table. Bunnies! Who knew they could be so naughty!

Simple Abundance

I'm reading a daybook that was given to me (you guys know the one) and am progressing toward a simply abundant life. Some of the simple things that make me happy, that bring a smile to my face:

Smiles, hugs, and kisses from my girls, when Emma copies my language, the Backyardigans, good books, a good homecooked meal, losing a pound (by the way, have you seen those commercials where people actually lose a belly or a double chin and leave it on the ground?), funny commercials, finding out something new about my husband, lipstick that actually looks good on me, a clean house, finding a really good deal, getting e-mail, getting snail mail, sunny days, being warm, when my husband calls me from work, learning something new, realizing an answer to a prayer, blessings, my husband, when my husband talks in his sleep, so-stupid-it's-funny movies, sewing, giving someone a gift, memories, childhood toys, etc., etc., it goes on and on....what are your warm fuzzies?

The Ideal Man Book

To answer the comments about the absence of the book on how to be an ideal man to your woman, I think there are two: The Bible and The Book of Mormon.

But for those of you who don't go that route, I don't know of any. My question is: Do you honestly think a man would sit down and patiently, lovingly, and thoughtfully create and instruction manual on how to be the ideal man to your woman? By our very natures, that probably won't happen. Men focus more on providing. The women are the nurturers. It's up to us!

This year in Primary (the children's program at Church) the kids are learning about a latter-day prophet each month. If they memorize the quote, they earn a coupon for a scoop of ice cream at the Halloween party. This month's prophet is Joseph Smith, Jr. and the quote is "Teach them correct principles and they govern themselves." Emma already has this memorized and is quite proud of herself. She repeats it to herself or to mommy or daddy at random. She can't say the word correct, though. The quote ends up sounding like this:

"Teach dem directa prinstiples and dey govern demselves."

Okay, hi! I'm reading this really awesome book right now called Fascinating Womanhood by Helen Andelin. It "shows you how to strengthen your marriage and enrich your life." It basically tells you how to be the ideal woman to a man. The thing I love about it is that it is really on target with my religious beliefs. It is so awesome! Every woman should read this.
