I just saw the link to upgrade your blog so you can customize it - whatever that means. So scary! I've made a lot of changes to my blog template, and the thought of losing them terrifies me! Although, I'm a little jealous of your funny, interesting, cool boxes...
I might be able to help you, but you seem to know just as much as I do about templates. I can right click on your page and view your source code, so if you tell me what you want to do, I may be able to tell you how to do it, or at least give you some suggestions of what might work.
I want to put a ticker up on the sidebar, my walk to rivendell progress, and my family pic.

I created a new test blog so I could figure this out. If you go to the layout tab for your blog and then to Page Elements you can "Add a Gadget" to either your sidebar or at the bottom of your blog. I used the HTML gadget to add the Walk to Rivendell and the Picture gadget to add Jareth. There are a bunch of options. They seem to be trying to eliminate the need to know how to manipulate html code.
